Are Glass Splashbacks Safe Behind a Hob?

It is one of the most common questions we are asked: can glass really go behind a hob? The short answer is yes. Toughened glass is designed for exactly this. Here is why, and what to check before you order.

Why toughened glass handles heat

Ordinary glass can crack when exposed to sudden changes in temperature. Toughened glass goes through a heat-treatment process that makes it far stronger and much more resistant to heat. Our splashbacks use 6mm toughened safety glass, around five times stronger than ordinary glass of the same thickness.

That is why glass has become one of the most popular choices behind hobs, cookers and range cookers.

Gas, induction and electric hobs

Toughened glass splashbacks are used behind all types of hob. Whatever you have, always follow your hob or cooker manufacturer's instructions on clearances to walls and surfaces. If you are unsure, our team can advise when we measure.

Safety glass: what it means

Toughened glass is classed as safety glass. It is much harder to break than ordinary glass, and in the unlikely event that it does break, it shatters into small, blunt pieces rather than sharp shards.

Things to check before ordering

  • Sockets and switches: any socket on the wall needs a cut-out in the glass. You can add these in our designer.
  • Cooker hoods: measure up to the underside of the hood, or choose a T-shape that is taller behind the hob.
  • The wall itself: the wall should be flat and sound for the glass to sit properly.

Popular designs behind hobs

Marble and onyx designs are a favourite behind cookers because they add a luxurious focal point. See our printed collection, or for something more subtle, coloured glass.

Peace of mind

All our splashbacks are made in our Windsor workshop and come with a 25-year warranty against cracking. If you would rather not measure yourself, our team can measure and fit your glass for you.
