Because every glass splashback is cut and toughened to order, it cannot be trimmed on site. Accurate measurements are essential. Here is how to measure properly, and when it is worth letting us do it for you.
What you will need
- A metal tape measure (not a fabric one)
- A pencil and paper, or your phone
- A spirit level, if you have one
Step 1: Choose your layout
Most splashbacks fall into one of a few shapes: a single panel, an L shape, a T shape (taller behind the hob), three separate panels, or a plus shape. Our online designer shows each layout and asks for exactly the measurements it needs.
Step 2: Measure the width
Measure the width along the worktop at the back, from one end of the area to the other. Measure in a few places, top and bottom, as walls are rarely perfectly straight, and use the smallest measurement.
Step 3: Measure the height
Measure from the top of the worktop to the underside of the wall cabinets or cooker hood. Again, measure in several places and use the smallest figure.
Step 4: Mark sockets and switches
For every socket or switch the glass will cover, measure from a corner of the panel to the centre of the socket, both across and up. In our designer you pick the corner you measured from and enter the two distances.
Step 5: Double-check
Enter width and height separately, in millimetres, and check every number. A small typing mistake produces a panel that fits the numbers you typed, not the wall you meant.
Common mistakes
- Measuring only once, on a wall that is not square
- Mixing up centimetres and millimetres
- Forgetting a socket, switch or spur
- Measuring to the edge of a socket instead of its centre
Not confident measuring?
That is completely normal. If you are in our fitting area across London and the South East, our team can visit with samples and template your space to the millimetre, then fit the glass for you. Send us a photo for a free quote.
Frequently asked questions
Can a glass splashback be cut on site?
No. Toughened glass cannot be cut after it has been toughened, which is why accurate measurements are so important.
Should I measure in millimetres or centimetres?
Our designer uses millimetres. Enter width and height separately and double-check every figure.
Can you measure for me?
Yes. In our fitting area across London and the South East, our team can template your space and install the glass.
